Claude Nicollier

Claude Nicollier is a Swiss astrophysicist and former astronaut. After studying physics in Lausanne and astrophysics in Geneva, he became a military pilot, and a commercial pilot with SWISSAIR, with a test pilot training in the United Kingdom. He served in the Swiss Air Force for nearly 40 years. Selected by ESA in 1978, he joined NASA in Houston for training on the Space Shuttle. He completed four space missions between 1992 and 1999, including two servicing missions to the Hubble Space Telescope, spending over 1000 hours in orbit, and performing an 8-hour spacewalk. Today, he is affiliated with Space Innovation in Lausanne, and taught at EPFL until 2024. He remains active as a lecturer, scientific advisor, and member of the Swiss Federal Commission for Space Affairs, contributing to Switzerland’s space policy.
